Risky Roads

I saw it glint like a jewel in the Queen’s crown. In shock and disbelief, I watched as Black flesh was swallowed up by red. For a heartbeat, everything fell silent and the world stopped turning. At first, I couldn’t even hear the sirens… and I was still shaking and stammering when the streets exploded in flashing red and blue. I knew I had to run. But I couldn’t. I was frozen. At that moment, all I could remember thinking…it’s all a dreamA nightmareAnd when I wake up, it will all be over.
In desperation I opened and closed my eyes, again and again, hoping with all my heart that this wasn’t happening. Nothing. The cold, dark truth began flooding in: this was reality and I was trapped. The full weight of that realisation brought a profound weakness to my legs, dropping me to my knees. Boom. I cried uncontrollably. The tears scorched my cheeks as they fell.
While the others ran away from his crumpled body, I crawled towards him. With the last of my waning strength, I dragged him into my arms and just held him. Held him like a grieving mother would hold her sick child. Except he wasn’t my child and I wasn’t his mother… I was his killer.
